How to Transfer Your Data to a New iPhone

Moving to a new iPhone does not have to be stressful. If you searched for move data, transfer phone, copy old iPhone to new iPhone, or move from Android to iPhone, this guide covers it. Your new iPhone can copy many of your photos, contacts, messages, apps, settings, and other information from your old phone during setup.

Important: Do not erase, trade in, or factory-reset your old phone until you have checked that your important photos, contacts, messages, and accounts are on the new iPhone.

Before you start

• Charge both phones or keep them connected to power.
• Connect to Wi-Fi if possible.
• Have your Apple Account password ready.
• Make sure you know the passcode for your old phone.
• Keep both phones near each other until the transfer finishes.

If your old phone is an iPhone

Quick Start is usually the easiest method.

1. Turn on the new iPhone and place it near your old iPhone.
2. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on on the old iPhone.
3. When the Quick Start message appears on the old iPhone, follow the instructions on the screen.
4. Use the old iPhone to scan the animation that appears on the new iPhone if asked.
5. Enter your old iPhone passcode on the new iPhone.
6. Set up Face ID or Touch ID when prompted.
7. Choose the option to transfer your data from your old iPhone.
8. Keep both phones near each other and connected to power until the transfer is finished.

Apple also allows transfers from an iCloud backup or a computer backup if you cannot use Quick Start.

If your old phone is Android

1. Turn on the new iPhone and begin setup.
2. When you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data, choose From Android.
3. On the Android phone, open Apple’s Move to iOS app if the iPhone tells you to use it.
4. Follow the instructions and enter the code shown on the iPhone.
5. Select the information you want to move.
6. Leave both phones alone and keep them connected until the progress bar on the iPhone finishes.
7. Finish setting up the iPhone.

Depending on the phones and software versions, you may also be offered a cable or QR-code transfer during setup.

What should you check afterward?

• Open Photos and check several older pictures and videos.
• Open Contacts and make sure important people are there.
• Check recent text messages.
• Open your email accounts.
• Open important apps such as banking, authentication, health, or work apps and make sure you can sign in.
• Make a test phone call and send a test text.

Some things may need extra setup

Some apps may require you to sign in again. Banking apps, authentication apps, eSIM service, Apple Pay cards, and certain app data may need separate setup even after the main transfer is complete.

If the transfer stops or fails

• Make sure both phones are charged and close together.
• Check the Wi-Fi connection.
• Restart both phones and try again if the setup gives you the option.
• Make sure the new iPhone has enough storage for the information you are moving.
• Do not erase the old phone while troubleshooting.
